I mainly use the Koa for making ukuleles (it's a native Hawaiian wood used for the manufacture of the first ukuleles) but other woods can of course be used: mahogany, rosewood, maple, ziricote, spruce, etc .. . it depends of the sound you want.
Another element which is very important is the size: soprano, concert, tenor or baritone, it depends of the sound you want, but also of the type of playing you practice.
Aesthetically, many choices are possible: simple binding around the body (ebony, koa, rosewood, maple) or purfling inlay around the top with abalone shell or wood; even the shell can also be used for inlays on the fretboad or headstock.
